As a general rule the more letters of RETAINS you have, the greater the chance of a bonus.

Below are all the bonus words you can make if you have six of those letters, RETAIN, and one other letter.

There are a lot of words, so to make learning easier, perhaps break them down into groups of 10-15 words or by distinct letter groups (i.e RETAIN+A, B, C, D and E).

RETAIN +

A - nothing

B - ATEBRIN

C - CANTIER, CERATIN, CERTAIN, CREATIN, CRINATE, NACRITE, TACRINE

Recently after a game of Boggle,  www.fuzzylogicinc.net/boggle  was used to check how many words we had NOT found in the grid. There were quite a few, most of which we knew but didn’t find in the time. However some of the others caught our eye…

They can all be formed by hooking common words on a Scrabble board : CANE+H, ALAN+E, A+LANE, HAE+N, ONCE+T. We then used zyzzyva (though probably other word lookup tools are available) to find other anagrams and hooks.

Next time you challenge a word, why not write it down, and look up the many derivatives later. Lots of new words for the price of one!

Here is a link to a short video on the BBC website. The words and tips have been produced by top UK player, Natalie Zolty - well worth a 2 minute watch!

How well do you know your 2, 3 and 4 letter words? They are important building blocks to getting higher scores, and finding opportunities to lay longer words such as bonuses. The ABSP (Association of British Scrabble Players) have a series of games on their website to test your knowledge.

The system automatically generates a 'word' and all you have to do is state whether it is 'valid' or phony'. You can set the game so you are automatically given the next 'word' once you've answered a question. Once you get an answer wrong...the game is over! Why not see have far you can go!!!

The 2 letter game is here : http://www.absp.org.uk/words/study2lwgame.shtml

The 3 letter game is here : http://www.absp.org.uk/words/study3lwgame.shtml
