Over the first weekend in February 2019 six players from East Berks Scrabble Club took part in a weekend's tournament on the Isle of Wight.
The weekend consisted of 2 ten game round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation for the top and bottom three between the two tournaments.
From the first tournament, congratulations are due to Tricia and Evelyn for coming first and third in Division D, and Maureen for coming third in Division C.
Sadly no-one won prizes in the second 10-game series... better luck next year!

Best improver for the 1st quarter of the year is Joy Wade, just ahead of Tricia Walker and Helen Harding. Patrick Beatty and Sue Ashwell *would* have been in the running for the prize if they had played just 2 or 3 games more in the quarter.

On a wet Saturday in early October, club member Graham Harding travelled to London, near Paddington station, to take part in the finals of the National Scrabble Championships. He’d qualified for the finals a few weeks before, at the Swindon tournament in mid-September. In a field of 52, including several previous winners, Graham was 37th in order of rating (standard). He finished 30th, winning eight games out of 16.
His most exciting game was against Phil Robertshaw, one of the 10 highest rated players in the tournament. Graham just scraped a win in an incredibly high scoring game, where the final scores were 503-501.
