Please note that CSW2024 was published during 2024, and became effective for use January 2025.
Some of the words and strategies discussed in this section may be affected by the addition and removal of words in CSW2024.
Two examples are the additions of HENTAIS (SATINE+H) and RAPIEST (SATIRE + P).

The Winter League reached its conclusion in early February. Here are the divisional tables - well done to Richard, Deborah and Charles for winning their respective divisions. (Minimum of 17 games).
2023-2024 WINTER LEAGUE
Played Won Lost Draw Win-Bon AvgBon Total AVERAGE Division A
Division B
Division C
During the season (up to the end of January, subject to bad weather etc), every player will have fixtures rearranged, broadly a range of different players each week. You may play some people more than once. A WIN is worth 10 points, a DRAW 5 points. Sadly nothing for a LOSS.
If you beat a player one Division above you, you get a 10 point bonus (WIN-BON). If you have beat a player 2 divisions above you get a 20 point bonus.
If anyone, winner or loser, in any division, exceeds their average score they will accrue a 5 point bonus. (AVG-BON). It doesn’t matter if you can’t play every week, as the total scores are averaged by the number of games played to see who won the league.
Promotion / relegation for those that play more 17+ games. |

What to do with 2 blanks ?
Try to make them into a 7 letter word. Think about the other 5 tiles -what is missing to make a good rack? An S ? A vowel ? A consonant ? Mentally turn one of the blanks into one of these ‘missing letters’ and then continue again to allocate the second blank.
Here are two questions :
1. What bonuses can you make with BLANK and two blanks ?
There are 8 words to find – try to find at least 5.
2. What are the 9 anagrams of NOVEM and two blanks ?
This is harder, most are NOT in common parlance, but most are ‘definable’ if you saw them in a book. Try to find at least 4.

On 9th October, Richard played in the Luton one-day tournament..
It was a well attended, enjoyable day with 42 players split between 3 divisions of 14 and the first tournament held there since 2019. Richard played in Division A and won 4 out of his seven games which was enough to finish 7th, win the ratings prize for the division and a cash prize.
The highlight was Richard managing to win 2 games against an expert player that he had not managed to defeat before.
Bonuses played in the tournament by Richard were as follows;
MORULAE, GRANULES, VAPORING, GREASING, ARTLESS, YPERITES, SNORTER, CREASING, BLISTER, RADIATE, LINEAGE, WHIRRING, ORACIES, DELATING, ENSLAVES, AERONAUT, TRIDENT, LISTENED.
Well played Richard - here is a photo of Richard receiving his rating prize. Thanks to Angele Andrews for supplying the photograph.
